MySQL Users Conf preparations

Well, I'm now confirmed for my speaking engagement at the MySQL Users Conference and Expo and have put together a set of slides for the presentation.

I'm really looking forward to this, my first, UC and looking at the list of tutorials and sessions, I'm going to be a busy boy! And I have to find time to help out at the dotProject table in the dotOrg pavilion. I guess I'm just going to have to ration my time wisely, I guess.

My must see list includes:

  • Testing the Security of Your Site - Sheeri Kritzer
  • Professional Cat Herding: A FOSS Community Panel - Jay Pipes, Cal Evans and Zak Greant
  • * PHP Performance and Scalability Best Practices - George Schlossnagle
  • * How to Build a Highly Scalable News Web Site - Michael Anderson
  • * Scaling the World's Largest Photo Blogging Community - Farhan Mashraqi
  • Federation at Flickr: Doing Billions of Queries Per Day - Dathan Pattishall

And this is only looking at the first half of the program! Mind you I may have to make some hard decisions as those marked * are all on at roughly the same time. Ah well, I can always get hold of the presentations later for those I miss.

I guess from the above sessions you can see where my interests lie.

If you are going, drop me a note or add a comment! I know for those outside the US it is a bit of a hike, but the UC is an amazing event, jam packed with great information and fascinating speakers.

I’m not going but I wish I could!

Never been to a MySQL UC but back when I was still working on SQL Server and went to MS conferences, the presentations that gave me most bang-for-the-minutes were the “Tips and Tricks” performance tuning sessions held by some seasoned professional, able to speak from experience.

The “how I built this wonderful site” presentations were typically less useful, as I’d get away from there with maybe one or two useful learnings vs. dozens above.

I don’t know anything in particular about the presenters mentioned above, it’s just my general observation.

I must admit I’m going to be sitting in on some of the ‘Tips and Tricks’ type sessions, I know the professionals involved and I think they are going to be very worthwhile. Unfortunately due to meetings and other commitments I’m probably going to miss a few of those.

My session isn’t really a “how I built this wonderful site", I’m a Senior Web Developer at MySQL and the talk will walk people through the tips and tricks of setting up hardware and software (including MySQL server) to achieve the level of performance needed to support a top 500 website. Possibly not going to fire up a hardcore DB junkie, but it should be informative. Mind you, even the DB junkie might be interested in the Monitoring and Advisory Service demo, which will show it in action on our live database servers that drive our websites and search engines, and I will cover how we use replication and failover slave servers.
