A Pony Next Door is nearly as good

I still haven't quite managed to run an argument about my very own pony - and I don't know that events on Wednesday morning in these parts exactly helped my position a lot B)

Meet Leroy:

Leroy and Mum

Born around 2.00am on Tuesday - mum was a bit standoffish to start off - by the time our neighbours had settled her and got her to accept the foal, he was a little weakened and bamboozled and couldn't work out how to suckle.

On Wednesday morning, it needed more hands to help / second opinions and general musings. We knew he was getting weak, and he was also refusing to take a feed from a bottle, so we decided that with all hands on deck, we'd have to get him to take something and then work out how to solve the not suckling problem. So one person milking the mare, one person holding Leroy, one person syringing milk down his throat and one person ringing the vet, doing the running backwards and forwards we managed to keep him going, until the vet could arrive. Poor man was in the middle of a paddock, mid operation when we'd rung. Luckily when the wonderful vet arrived, and put a stomach tube into him, he was able to give him a really decent feed. From there the foal started to accept bottle feeding, until FINALLY he worked out what suckling for yourself is all about.

Suckling at Last

He's only 3 days old mind you, so he's still a little wobbly but he's out, about and starting to explore his world. (We snuck over this afternoon, as promised, just to make sure that all was serene).

Bit wobbly understandably

Exploring

Luckily - no such dramas with his half-sister born the week before - isn't she the prettiest little thing!

The Filly

We're hoping for visiting rights - it's only fair as we often have a chat over the fence with the stallion who thinks our Alpacas are just... well weird if the look on his face is any indication!
