They've Arrived

We've picked out 4 names, now we're just working out which name fits which personality - but the boys arrived last night. Into a gale force wind and some rain, but they survived the night quite well and today we let them out into the old pig paddock / vegetable garden for a bit of settling in.

The two coloured boys have been together before, as have the whites, but they've never been all 4 in a group, so they've got a little settling in to do:

Mind you, nothing every goes simply around here, and the astute amongst you may have noticed something about the last photo.

There are actually 9 alpacas here at the moment:

The breeder Rohan, was delivering our boys to us last night after taking his stud males to a mating in Stawell. Unfortunately he hit a kangaroo on the way over and that pretty much totaled the radiator in his van, so he arrived very late last night, in a very hot smelling van with 9 alpacas in the back. We unloaded them and penned them all up in two groups in the pig sheds overnight and the 4 adult boys, and the larger of the white males are having a bit of a holiday for today / part of tomorrow until Rohan can borrow a float and get back down to pick them up.

They have to be kept separated as the larger white male in with our 4 at the moment gets picked on a bit by the stud males - still we've got the facilities here to keep them happy and occupied (and fed) until Rohan gets back. (The look on the postwoman's face this morning when she pulled up at the front gate only to be peered at most intently by a line up of Alpacas was priceless!)

Gee I know I went for birthday celebrations today, but you really had me worried I’m glad there are 9 and I wasn’t seeing things after all and I can imagine the postwomans face because mine was a bit of a study I think too, will look forward to meeting them when next we call…… even from a distance
